Grant's Cast

Grant fractured his femur back in April. It happened at his daycare while playing with a soccer ball. He apparently tripped and landed on it wrong. We took him to the ER and they immediately performed a closed reduction of the femur on him. It was so scary to see your 2 year old put under for 2 hours....Anyway, they put a Spica Cast on him from the waist down one leg and 1/2 of the other leaving a small hole for a diaper. It was so miserable changing his diapers. There was so much urine and poop soaked in that he was developing a horrible rash due to the acid and the fiber glass from the cast. By the end of the week he was in so much pain and uncomfortable we took him to the ER again and then finally ended up at Children's where they performed another closed reduction and put a brand new cast on him. This time he fit in his car seat, stroller, and high chair. They even lined it with special lining to keep away the urine and poop from his skin. There was a handy dandy stick for me to lift and carry him by since the darn cast weighed so much. He was in the cast about 5 weeks and went to physical therapy for 2. We go back in August to see how everything is healing! It was a struggle when he first got the cast off - walked around like a drunken sailor, but he is running around now like a little boy! It was an ordeal, but Grant was a real trooper through the whole thing! We are so lucky that nothing worse happened.

  1. Sorry to hear about Grant's spcia cast. He looks like a happy little boy.

You may be interested to read about other spica cast parents' experience with the CastCooler. The CastCooler removes moisture trapped in the spica cast lining, reducing odor and itch.

Wishing you a speedy and more comofrtable recovery.
